Description
An Cliabh Beag (The Small Creel)
This basket is adapted to be a smaller, more practical version of the iconic Irish peat creel, made and used widely among the country folk of Ireland and Scotland. These were normally much bigger, and strapped to donkeys or carried on the backs of these hardy people, and were often used for carrying much more than just peat. Truly a multi-purpose basket of the hard-working crofter. See a picture of them in use by some hardy women in the gallery above. This finer adaptation is made for modern day uses, like nipping to the shops or having a picnic, while reminding us of harder times passed. Made with the varieties Brittany Green and Brittany Blue, with the Brittany Blue grown on the West Coast of Scotland. It features 100% hemp, riveted strapping in the handles, attached through the window for strength.
